New Link and a Shameless Plug

I've just put up a link to The Women's Post. If you go over there and look closely at their list of contributors, you will see that I am now one of them. Vivian Paige very kindly invited me to write for them.

I will be putting up a post there soon. Right now, though, I'm going to go recover from a two hour root canal. It actually wasn't so bad thanks to Novacaine. Unfortunately, the Novacaine is now wearing off and I have a headache from holding my mouth open most of the entire time. It gives all new meaning to the term "flap your jaw."

Right now I'm going to rest mine.

Ibuprofen. Advil, Motrin, generic. Best thing for bone pain. My FDA friends told me, in layman's terms, take it before your pain receptors wake up, and you may never feel anything.

Thanks so much. That is great advice. Fortunately, the pain actually went away pretty quickly. I had a splitting headache, at least partly brought on by the fact that I had the root canal at 10:30, and the Novacaine didn't wear off until 4:30 (the actual procedure took 2 1/2 hours).

So, I hadn't eaten since breakfast, which was at 8:30 a.m. I couldn't take any NSAID (non-steroid anti-inflammatory) on an empty stomache anyway. And after I ate something, I started to feel better.

Other than some range of motion limits in my jaw (which I've had before after long procedures) there's really no pain and little discomfort.

I'm saying all this because I spent a good portion of the last few years terrified of needing a root canal. I used to joke that if I need one, just shoot me.

But it's truly not as bad as its reputation. I'm extremely difficult to numb - it always takes about three shots - and if I got through it, probably most people can. So, if you ever find yourself needing one, don't let fear get you the way it did me.

And again, thanks for the great advice. How did people muddle through before modern painkillers!
